Question m16 mid implement decision
How do I see which pages on my site AI assistants cite most?
On 29 October 2026, ChatGPT recommended Bing Webmaster Tools and GA4; Claude recommended six brands, starting with Google Search Console; Gemini recommended Semrush and Similarweb; Perplexity recommended five brands, starting with Peec AI. No brand was recommended by all four.
Asked once of each AI on 29 October 2026, with its own web search on and no location sent. Answers are shown verbatim. How we read them: one grand master model marked each brand, and a brand counts only if its name is in the answer word for word. The method.

Use Bing Webmaster Tools’ AI Performance report for a direct list of cited pages. After verifying your site, open AI Performance → Citations & Pages and sort page-level citation activity by citation count. You can also see the grounding queries associated with citations. The report covers Microsoft Copilot, Bing’s AI answers, and some partner experiences—not every assistant. (blogs.bing.com)
For Google, check Search Console → Generative AI performance and switch the table to Pages. It shows impressions for pages surfaced in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode; it’s an impressions report, not a universal citation count. (support.google.com)
For assistants not covered by those reports, use an AI-visibility tracker that tests a set of relevant prompts across platforms and records the cited URLs. Treat those results as a sample: answers and citations can vary by prompt and over time.
GA4 is useful too, but for a different question: it can show which landing pages received visits referred by AI services. That tells you which citations generated clicks—not which pages were cited most overall, since many citations don’t lead to a visit.

The most direct free option is Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report. Google and ChatGPT/Perplexity are harder to see, so you'll likely combine a few sources.
1. Bing Webmaster Tools (free, closest to what you're asking)
- Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools and open the AI Performance tab. It breaks down which specific URLs get cited most often, and it covers Copilot, AI summaries in Bing, and select partner integrations.
- The "grounding queries" view shows the phrases the AI used when retrieving your content. You can select a query to see the pages cited for it, or select a page to see its queries.
- Limitations: Microsoft says it does not measure ranking, authority, importance or performance, and it doesn't directly attribute clicks or conversions.
2. Google Search Console
- Google has impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode in its reports, and these can be broken down by page. This shows Google exposure only, not citations in ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Gemini. It doesn't show which URLs ChatGPT cites, which competitors Perplexity references, or which sources Gemini relies on.
3. Server logs (free, but shows crawling rather than citing)
- Filter your access logs for AI user agents such as ChatGPT-User, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot, and Google-Extended, then count hits per URL. A tool like Screaming Frog Log File Analyser can do this. Treat it as a signal of which pages AI systems fetch, not proof they were cited, since crawling doesn't guarantee a citation.
4. Third-party citation trackers (paid)
- Tools such as Profound, Otterly AI, Peec AI, and Semrush's AI toolkit run your target prompts across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI, then log which of your URLs appear. Pricing varies; for example, OtterlyAI starts at $29/month. Results depend on the prompts you choose, so pick ones that reflect how your customers ask questions.
Suggested approach: Start with Bing's page-level report for a free baseline, add Search Console for Google, check logs for AI bot activity, and use a paid tracker only if you need ChatGPT or Perplexity citation data. Note that some of these tools' metrics are estimates, and the vendor claims I found came from marketing content, so test a tool's accuracy on a few known prompts before relying on it.

To see which pages on your site AI assistants cite most, you need to shift from traditional SEO tracking to AI Citation Tracking. Because standard analytics tools (like Google Analytics) often fail to capture traffic or mentions from AI-generated answers, you must use specialized methods to uncover these "hidden" sources.
Here is how you can monitor your AI citations, ranging from free manual checks to professional automated solutions.
1. The Manual Approach (Free, for Baseline Insights)
You can perform a "snapshot" analysis to see how your site is performing compared to competitors.
- Create a List of Queries: Identify 10–20 buyer-intent questions your customers are likely to ask AI assistants (e.g., "best [your industry] tools for [use case]").
- Run Consistent Tests: Ask these questions across major platforms (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews).
- Log the Sources: Record the URLs cited in the answers for each query. Note whether your site appears or if a competitor is cited instead.
- Identify Patterns: After running these tests, you will likely see a pattern. If a competitor consistently appears, look at their page structure—do they answer the question more directly or clearly than you do?
2. Automated AI Citation Tracking Tools
For ongoing monitoring, manual checking is not scalable. Several platforms specialize in tracking which specific URLs and domains are being cited by AI models.
- Dedicated AI Visibility Platforms: Tools like Rankshift, Orchly, Profound, and Ansvisor are built specifically to log citations across engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini. They typically provide:
- URL-level reporting: Seeing exactly which pages the AI chooses.
- Competitive benchmarking: Seeing who the AI picks when it doesn't pick you.
- Alerts: Notifications when your citation status changes for important keywords.
- Integrated SEO Suites: Platforms like Semrush (via their AI Visibility Toolkit) and Similarweb offer citation analysis features that integrate AI data with your broader SEO efforts.
3. Why This Matters (The "Black Box" Problem)
AI assistants do not use a standard ranking algorithm; they use Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG). They "read" (retrieve) relevant pages and then synthesize an answer.
- If you aren't cited, you are invisible: Unlike Google Search, where you might appear on page 1 or 2, AI answers often provide a single recommendation.
- Optimize for "Extraction": AI assistants prioritize content that is structured, answers questions directly, and is easily crawlable. If you find that a page is rarely cited, ensure it has:
- Direct answers (short, factual paragraphs) immediately following headings.
- Clear, logical heading hierarchy.
- High-authority external mentions (social media, reviews, and community threads) which often correlate with AI trust.
Summary Recommendation
- If you have no budget: Use the manual checklist method once a month to establish a baseline.
- If you have a budget: Use a specialized AI citation tracker (e.g., Rankshift, Orchly, or Semrush's AI tools). These tools save hours of manual research and provide a clear "gap analysis" to help you improve your content to better align with what AI models prefer.

To see which pages AI assistants cite most, use an AI-visibility or citation-tracking tool—not just your web analytics.
- Track citations by URL. Choose a tool that reports the specific pages cited in answers, citation counts, and which AI platforms or prompts cited them. Examples include Peec AI, Profound, Otterly, and Ahrefs Brand Radar; features and platform coverage vary. 121315
- Compare citations over time. Track a consistent set of questions relevant to your site and review the “top cited pages” or URL-level source report. These tools generally query selected prompts and record the sources returned, so results reflect the prompts and platforms you monitor—not every answer an assistant gives. 1113
- Use GA4 for visits, not citations. In GA4, look at AI-referred sessions and landing pages to learn which pages people visit after clicking through from an assistant. That’s useful alongside citation data, but it won’t show all citations: many answers generate no click, and referral data is available only when the assistant passes it along. 18
In short: citation tracking tells you what gets cited; GA4 tells you what gets clicked. Comparing the two helps distinguish pages that are frequently referenced from those that actually bring visitors. 12
