How Gemini answers with Google Search behind it

Published Updated

Gemini can answer with Google Search behind it: for questions that need current information, it retrieves results from Google Search, reads what it needs and writes an answer based on them. This is called grounding. It means the brands Gemini names often reflect what Google's search index surfaces for the question, filtered through Gemini's own judgement about what to include. It is not the same thing as the order of a Google results page.

What does "grounded in Google Search" mean?

A language model on its own answers from memory. Grounding adds a lookup step. When a question calls for fresh or specific information, Gemini can issue searches, receive results from Google Search and use them to write the response.

Google documents grounding with Search as a capability of its models, and it can show the sources it used. Whether grounding happens on a given question is a decision made by the system, so some answers will be grounded and others will not.

Why does this matter for brands?

Two reasons.

First, Google's index is the largest map of the public web. If a page is not indexed, it has little chance of informing a grounded answer. Basic search health therefore matters: pages that can be crawled, indexed and understood.

Second, grounding connects Gemini's answers to the same web that your SEO work addresses. That is why teams with strong SEO often assume they will do well in Gemini. Sometimes they do. But the link is looser than it sounds, as the next section shows.

Does ranking first on Google mean Gemini names you?

Not reliably. Gemini does not paste the top result. It reads what comes back and writes a synthesis. For "best" and comparison questions, the pages that inform the answer are frequently lists and reviews, not the brand's own pages.

So you can rank first for your own brand name and still be absent from the answer to "what are the best options for X". The reverse also happens: a brand that ranks modestly for broad terms appears because it is well described on several roundups. For the wider question, see do AI assistants follow Google rankings?

They are different surfaces that can behave differently. Gemini is an assistant you converse with. AI-generated answers in Google Search appear on the results page itself. Both can draw on Google's index, but they are different products, with different interfaces and settings, and results from one do not predict the other.

If your customers use either, test either. Do not assume one stands in for the other.

What do Gemini answers tend to look like?

Gemini answers to buying questions typically give a short explanation, then a handful of named options with a line on each. It may offer to refine by budget or use. As with other assistants, it varies between runs, and phrasing changes the outcome. Compare it with the others rather than reading it alone: how to compare answers across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity.

What should you watch for when testing Gemini?

Test with care about what you are looking at. Gemini appears in several places, including a standalone assistant and features inside other Google products, and these may be set up differently. Decide which surface your customers use, and test that one.

Note whether the answer was grounded. If sources are shown, search was used, and you can examine the pages. If none are shown, the answer may come from training alone, and your levers are different. Ask the same question a few times and see whether grounding switches on and off.

Watch also for consistency between what Gemini says and what your own pages say. If it gets a detail wrong, such as who you serve or what you offer, look at the cited pages and at how you are described elsewhere. Wrong answers usually trace to unclear, outdated or conflicting sources rather than to anything mysterious.

Keep every answer you collect. Grounded answers can change as the underlying search results change, and a saved copy is the only record of what was said at the time.

What can you do about it?

The steps are the familiar ones, applied with Gemini in mind.

  1. Make sure Google can index your key pages. Check that they are not blocked and that they load properly.
  2. Write pages that answer real questions plainly. Grounded answers draw on text that is clear and specific.
  3. Be present on pages that compare options. Honest inclusion on reputable roundups and review pages helps across every assistant.
  4. Keep facts consistent. If your pricing or positioning differs between sources, the model has to choose, and may choose wrongly.
  5. Measure Gemini on its own. Run a fixed question list, repeat it and count mentions, recommendations and citations.

Structured data can help machines understand what a page is about, though it is no guarantee of anything. Structured data and AI answers looks at what it can and cannot do.

How do you check where you stand?

Ask Gemini the questions your buyers ask, without naming your brand, several times. Look at who is named and which sources are shown. A quick start is the Citewake checker, and for a rigorous approach read how the method keeps every answer and counts them fairly.

What is the short version?

Gemini can read the web through Google Search, then write its own answer. Your search health gets your pages into the pool, and clear, well-supported descriptions of your brand across the web determine whether the written answer names you. Measure it directly, repeatedly, and keep what it says.

Questions

Does Gemini use Google Search?
Gemini can use Google Search to ground its answers, which means it retrieves current web results and uses them when writing a response. It does not do this for every question.
If I rank well on Google, will Gemini mention me?
A good ranking helps your pages get found, but it does not guarantee a mention. Gemini writes its own answer and may rely on roundups or other sources instead.
Is Gemini the same as Google's AI answers in search?
They are related but separate surfaces. Gemini is an assistant you ask directly. AI answers in search appear on the results page. Test each on its own.
Should I optimise differently for Gemini?
The groundwork is the same: clear pages, accurate claims and a presence on the pages others cite. Measure Gemini separately because its answers can differ from the other assistants.
