What's the best free website builder?

Wix is the best free website builder for most people: it’s flexible, beginner-friendly, and offers lots of templates and drag-and-drop design tools. You can publish without paying, but the free site uses a Wix address and displays Wix branding; you’ll need a paid plan for a custom domain and to remove the ads. (wix.com)

A couple of alternatives, depending on what you’re making:

• Canva — best for a simple, polished landing page, portfolio, or event site. Free publishing is available on a Canva domain, though its features are more limited. (canva.com)
• Google Sites — best for a basic informational site or shared project, where ease matters more than design flexibility.

Quick pick: Wix for a general-purpose site; Canva for a one-page visual site.

Wix is the most consistent pick across current reviews, though the best choice depends on what you need.

• Overall: Reviewers generally rank Wix first. One 2026 roundup credits its drag-and-drop editor, AI assistant, and over 2,000 professional templates on the free plan. Its trade-off is branding: it includes visible Wix branding.
• No ads: Google Sites stands out for having no ads at all. It's basic, but it's useful for simple information pages.
• Beginners: SITE123 builds a site for you from a few questions, while Wix gives you more freedom with a drag-and-drop editor.
• Selling products: Square Online is the only builder on this list that lets you sell for free, according to one review.
• Single-page portfolio or landing page: Carrd is the fastest way to ship a free one-page portfolio or landing page.
• Long-term flexibility: WordPress is the only pick that is free software forever, not just a free tier, though you still pay for hosting.

Keep in mind that free plans almost always have limits. Most include platform branding, subdomains instead of custom domains, limited storage or bandwidth, and sometimes advertisements. If you want your own domain name, you'll likely need to pay.

If you tell me what the site is for (portfolio, small business, online store, blog), I can narrow this down.

Finding the "best" free website builder depends entirely on what you are trying to build. In 2026, there is no such thing as a truly "unlimited" free builder—every platform that offers a free tier will include some combination of third-party branding (ads), a subdomain (e.g., yourname.wixsite.com instead of yourname.com), and limited access to premium features like custom domains or advanced e-commerce.

Here is a breakdown of the best options based on how you intend to use them:

1. Best Overall for Versatility: Wix

Wix remains the top recommendation for most users because it balances a powerful drag-and-drop editor with robust AI tools.

• Best for: Beginners who want full creative control and a wide range of features.
• The "Free" Trade-off: Your site will display Wix branding, and you must use a Wix-provided subdomain.
• Why it wins: It provides a vast template library and scalable features, making it easy to start for free and upgrade later if your site becomes successful.

2. Best for Simple, Single-Page Sites: Carrd

If you just need a landing page, a portfolio, or a "link-in-bio" style site, Carrd is arguably the best choice.

• Best for: Personal profiles, simple landing pages, or projects that require one page only.
• The "Free" Trade-off: You are limited to a single page and will have a "Made with Carrd" footer.
• Why it wins: It is extremely fast to set up, highly responsive, and feels much less "cluttered" than larger platforms.

3. Best for Blogs: WordPress.com

While it has a steeper learning curve than drag-and-drop builders, it is the industry standard for content-heavy sites.

• Best for: Writers, bloggers, or anyone who plans to create a large amount of content over time.
• The "Free" Trade-off: Includes WordPress.com ads and a subdomain.
• Why it wins: If you eventually want to move to your own hosting, WordPress provides the most flexibility and export options.

4. Best Completely Ad-Free Option: Google Sites

If you need a functional, simple site and absolutely cannot stand platform branding or ads, this is your best bet.

• Best for: Internal team sites, simple project hubs, or very basic personal information pages.
• The "Free" Trade-off: The designs are quite dated, and customization is very limited compared to builders like Wix or Framer.
• Why it wins: It is completely free, has no ads, and integrates perfectly with your existing Google Workspace/account.

Summary Checklist: Before You Choose

Before you start building, ask yourself these three questions to ensure you don't waste time on the wrong platform:

1. Do I need a custom domain? If you need to look professional for a business, you will eventually have to pay for a custom domain (e.g., .com) regardless of the builder you choose.
2. Will I need e-commerce? If you plan to sell products, check if the free tier actually allows transactions. Many builders allow you to build a store for free but lock the checkout process behind a paid plan.
3. How much effort do I want to put in? If you want AI to do the work, look at Wix or GoDaddy. If you want total design freedom and have a good eye for style, Framer or Wix are superior.

Wix is the best free website builder for most people: it’s beginner-friendly, offers lots of templates and drag-and-drop editing, and lets you publish without paying. The free plan does come with Wix branding, a Wix subdomain, and limited storage and bandwidth, so it’s best for personal projects or trying out an idea—not a polished business site. ³⁴

A couple of alternatives:

• WordPress.com if your main goal is blogging and publishing articles. ¹⁴
• Google Sites if you want a very simple informational site, though it offers less design flexibility.

If you need your own domain and no platform branding, expect to use a paid plan. ²
